In many artistic activities, American photographers exchanged views with Chinese audiences, and then they took repeated trips to some famouscities in Jiangnan. They had never observed Chinese culture at such a close range before, andthey could not help pressing shutters continually to capture the beautiful scenes and their own emotional and intellectual responses. In this way, they extended their vision from the west to Jiangnan in China, and as a result we have this splendid collection.
Jiangnan in China refers to the whole region in the south of the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, including the north of Jiangxi province, south of Hubei province and the north region of Hunan province and parts of Fujian; and in a narrower sense Jiangnan means thestrip from Nanjing to Suzhou, including parts of Anhui province, Jiangxi province and Zhejiang province. "Up above there is heaven; down below there are Suzhou and Hangzhou." These twocities are typical Jiangnan towns which have captured the imagination of thousands of Chinese poets.
