When the characters were first created,the ancient Chinese had quite deliberately decided to select the square form,and numerous primitive rock paintings, symbols carved on pottery ware,and early character FS are almost all square.The earliest character, the symbol of“旦”in the Dawenkou Culture, was obviously a rectangle;the earfiest mature characters, i.e.the Jiaguwen and Jinwen, nearly all had rectangular forms;Xiaozhuan characters, standardized by Emperor Qinshihuang of the Qin Dynasty(221—206 BC)were rectangular, with a symmetry between up and down and 1eft and right;after the change of Lishu,Han characters gradually became fixed onthe square forrnI and the Kaishu characters we use today have a veryregular squareform.Sowe candefinitely say that the square for misthefundamental forlTlal feature of Han characters, and the evolution of Han characters was from an irregular to are gular square form.The square form of Han characters was a result of a sort of natural selection based on visual appeal.

About the Author:

Han Jiantang, a native of Tianjin in north China, is a Chinese languageprofessor with the Tianjin Normal University. He has been teaching Chinese to foreign students for 22 years. In 1994, he was sent by Ministry of Education of PRC to teach Chinese in Inner Mongolia's Ulan Bator National University for three years.Works: Chinese Culture (1994), which was used by the China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (Hanban for short) and later adopted as a teaching material for Mandarin Chinese teaching. It was displayed at the Frankfurt International Book Fair in 1999 and was issued in the Uygur language in 2002. Other works include Approaching Traditional Chinese Art (2001) produced for Hanban, and Picture Book on Chinese Characters Culture (2005)which is also used for teaching Chinese as a foreign language. He has published a dozen research papers, some of which have won awards. In addition, he has published hundreds of illustrations in newspapers and journals; some of his works have been put on view in the Tianjin Fine Art Works Show and the Beijing Art Gallery.
