GU10 48 SMD Warm White LED Bulb, best replacement yet for the GU10 50w Halogen. Vdeen lighting Highly
recommends this LED Lamp. The best we have seen yet. Using only 3w this is a grade A Energy rated light source.
I've compared many different types, and I these are my first choice because they give a truly warm light and, importantly, they have a really wide angle of illumination, quite different from most other GU10 LEDS which illuminate over only 30 degrees or so. Another reviewer has commented that his room was less bright than with compact fluorescents, and I think it's important to realise that good LED's are only slightly more efficient than CFL in terms of total light output (around 70 lumens/watt as against 60 lumens/watt for CFL, 16 lumens/watt for standard tungsten filament, and 20 lumens/watt for halogen). So claims that 3 watt LED's are equivalent to 50 watt halogen are far-fetched (a good 3 Watt LED such as this one should be equivalent to around around 11 watts of halogen, or 3 or 4 watts of CFL). Exagerated claims are possibly based on apparent high brightness at a worktop, but this is not a fair comparison because of the different angles of illumination. The 3-LED GU10 lamps with lenses on the front appear quite a bit brighter than these SMD devices, but only over a much smaller area, so that they produce very harsh illumination which has the effect of making a room look very dim because the eye adjusts to the very bright patches and highlights. These wide angle LEDs will illuminate a wide area of worktop evenly, to much better effect, but because they give very little light output upwards they still cause harsh shadows. Filling in the shadows a bit, either with added CFL lighting of the ceiling, or with extra LEDs pointed at the ceiling can give a very nice result, with some energy saving and higher levels of light where they are needed, but it is important to realise that to get the same overall level as you would with a couple of 20 watt CFL's you still need 20 to 30 watts of LED, or around ten lamps, all carefully placed directly above work surfaces ( not in the middle of the room or you will be working in your own shadow) in such a way as to act as fill lights for each other. I don't agree with the reviewer who says they are more like daylight than tungsten - they really look pleasantly yellow compared to daylight, a huge improvement over the blue-looking devices.
