Health preservation of traditional Chinese medicine is a practical subject for studying and explaining the basic theories, approaches and application for the laws of generation and development of life, diseases prevention, constitution promotion and extending one's life. Along with the progress of researches in life science and social development, this unique subject in TCM more and more demonstrates its practical value and significance of pervasion. Under direct guidance of the Ministry of Education of P. R. C. and the Ministry of Health of P. R. C., this textbook was written by professors and experts organized by National Academy of Medical Textbook of Higher Education, in order to enhance the quality of talents in TCM, to adapt the needs of social development and to conform transformation of modem medical mode.
This book is applicable as the textbook of a required course for foreign students studying TCM in China. It is also suitable to be the textbook of one elective course for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the majors such as TCM and integrated Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine.
This book consists of three parts. Part One deals with the basic theories of health preservation in TCM, including introduction, essentials of health preservation of TCM, the basic concepts about health preservation of TCM, The basic theories and principles of health preservation in TCM. Part Two mainly introduces methods of health preservation, including health preservation with Mental Activity health preservation through diet, health preservation based on environment and daily life, health preservation through life, health preservation with exercises, health preservation by recreation, health preservation through bathing, health preservation by medical substances, health preservation through acupuncture, moxibustion and massage, and health preservation through qigong. Part Three gives rise to guidance of health preservation, including health preservation in correspondence to constitution, health preservation in correspondence to individuality, health preservation in accordance with four seasons and proper care of particular parts of the human body and so on.
Being a comprehensive and practical subject, health preservation in TCM, is rooted from Chinese traditional culture and based on fundamental theory of TCM, Chinese materia medica, formulas, acupuncture and moxibustion as well as internal medicine, surgery, gynecology and pediatrics. Therefore, the readers can achieve overall assimilation through a comprehensive study of this book in combination with other books of the series by means of mutual connection and consultation.
The compilation and translation of the textbook were accomplished by the Compiling and Translating Committee of Textbooks. After several times of amending of the manuscripts, Professor Liu Zhanwen, the compiler-in-chief and translator-in-chief has finally completed the revision and integration of both Chinese and English versions. During the process of our work, a number of foreign visiting scholars have given help in compiling this book. We are grateful to Professor John Glover from U. S. A., Amy Ramona from New Zealand, Dr. Pete Kershaw from Australia, etc for their significantly useful suggestions concerning the translation of this book. The compilation and translation of the book is a demanding job, although we have tried our best to do it, the time is short and the academic level of compilers and translators is limited, inaccuracies therefore, are unavoidable. Any suggestion concerning its contents and format will be appreciated. We will take them into careful consideration in the next edition, and we believe that with such help, this textbook will be much improved in the next edition.
