Qinghai Province, with an area of 720, 000 square kilometres, neighbours Gansu and Sichuan provinces and the Tibet and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regions in West and Southwest China, linking both of the latter with the rest of the Chinese mainland.
Qinghai lake is the largest inland lake and the largest saltwater lake in China. The lake is called “Kuku Naur” in Mongolian or “Cuowenbo” in Tibetan, both of which mean “blue lake”. Qinghai province got its name from Qinghai lake; its capital is Xining.
With a population of 5.543 million people at the end of 2008, Qinghai is a multi-ethnic province with residents from 54 of China’s 56 ethnic groups, including Han, Tibetan, Hui, Mongolian, Tu and Salar populations.
Qinghai Province has one prefectural-level city, one district and six minority autonomous prefectures: Xining City, Haidong Prefecture, the Western Mongolian-Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Northern Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Southern Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and the Guoluo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
