Nutmeg is easily recognized as one of the most popular spices in every kitchen. But Nutmeg is more than
just a flavoring, being used for headaches, bad breath and digestive problems such as diarrhea, nausea and excess flatulence.
History and Uses:
Nutmeg is a spice that comes from a tree indigenous to the Molucca Islands, sometimes called the Spice Islands, in the Pacific Ocean. Now it is cultivated in many places where the climate is warm and moist, and the soil rich. The Nutmeg is a handsome evergreen tree that grows from about thirty to sixty feet in height. It has small, pale yellow flowers and a golden fruit that looks like an apricot. When the fruit dries, the skin splits open with a shiny, brown seed inside, and the kernel of the seed is the Nutmeg. The brown seed has a red cover that makes another spice called Mace. Nutmeg is a delicious spice with a sweet fragrance. It is used to flavor cakes and puddings and tastes very good in some drinks. The oil of Nutmeg is used to make perfume and to flavor tobacco. Nutmeg also contains a valuable, thick, yellow fat that is called Nutmeg butter. Nutmeg butter is used to make candles and is important in certain salves and medicines. Medicinally, Nutmeg has been used for thousands of years in India for headaches, fever and bad breath. The Arabs used Nutmeg as a digestive aid and as an enhancement. Nutmeg is still used to treat flatulence, as a digestive aid, to improve appetite and to treat diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.
