Here we consider a ferroelectric to be a pyroelectric material with two or more stable states of different
nonzero polarization. Unlike electrets, ferroelectrics have polarization states that are thermodynamically stable, not metastable. Furthermore, it must be possible to switch between the two states by the application of a sufficiently strong electric field, the threshold field being designated the coercive field.
