Neodymium-doped Yttrium-Aluminum Garnet (Nd:YAG) crystal, which continues as the best of the rare earth
garnet materials that are characterized by four-level laser operation which permits low threshold pulse and cw operation, is the most mature and widely used solid-state laser material adopted by R&D, medical, industrial and military customers. Its main and obvious advantages are listed as follows: high gain, low threshold, high efficiency, low loss at 1.064µm, as well as high optical quality, good thermal conductivity and thermal shock characteristics, more stable chemical and mechanical properties, which make Nd:YAG as the most suitable and commercial laser material for various modes of operation (CW, pulsed, Q- switched, mode locked and cavity dumped).
Because of the unsatisfied thermo-mechanical performance of Nd:YAG crystal, perfect beam quality is difficult to get in high power high density Nd:YAG laser systems. In order to overcome the so-call "thermo-lens" problems and mechanical stresses of the laser crystals, Lasertec have developed three techniques:
i) to manufacture continuous-grooves on barrel of rods to conduct more internal thermal from rod in less time by cooling liquid;
ii) to manufacture Concave Surface - Plano-Concave ends or Double-Concave ends on the laser rods to decrease thermo lensing effect;
iii) advanced adhesive-free Diffusion-Bonding technology to get combination of undoped YAG (with larger thermal conductive capability) with Nd:YAG, to reduce thermo-optic distortions considerably. Now we can manufacture and supply rods and slabs of YAG/Nd:YAG, YAG/Nd:YAG/YAG.
Furthermore, by advanced Diffusion Bonding technology, passively Q-switched microchip laser devices, such as YAG/Nd:YAG/Cr:YAG, YAG/Yb:YAG/Cr:YAG are manufactured in Lasertec Inc, to help customers to assembly more compact, more effective laser systems with higher grade performance.
